Yorick Lodge tastings will aim to expand your whisky knowledge and educate your palate with six tastings of different themed whiskies from Scotland together with Speyside, the Highlands and Islands, Ireland, Japan, North America, England, Wales, and all countries and continents in between whether you are a new whisky imbiber or experienced aficionado.
The Tastings began with our Yorick Lodge Metropolitan Whisky inaugural meeting in November 2023 and will continue with the following themes subject to our rapidly growing membership deciding otherwise.
21st November 2023 Meeting- Scottish Speyside Whiskies
Benromach 2012 Virgin Oak Kiln Dried 46%
Ten-year-old matured in kiln-dried virgin oak cask, which reduces the moisture level in the wood and elevates its natural spice notes. offers aromas of toffee, shortbread, and citrus on the nose, with a ginger cookie, peppermint, and white pepper on the palate.
Glenallachie 7-Year-Old Hungarian Oak 48%
Seven years in American oak barrels – followed by an 18-month rest in virgin Hungarian oak casks – bringing out subtle flavour nuances between different oak species.
Glenallachie 11 Year Old Marsala Finish 48%
Eight years in ex-bourbon barrels. Three-and-a-half years in Marsala wine casks from the island of Sicily imbued it with rich notes of honey, toasted nuts, and stewed fruit.
Glen Moray Rhum Agricole Finish 46.3%
Finished in rhum Agricole casks from the St James distillery in Martinique. A sweet and spicy whisky, it has soft aromas of marzipan, apricot jam, pineapple, and burnt sugar. The palate offers notes of treacle toffee, kirsch cherries, and spicy gingerbread.
Glenrothes Whiskey Maker’s Cut 48.8%
A rich non-age-statement whisky matured entirely in first-fill sherry casks, with notes of orange, vanilla, nutmeg, and oak.
Auchroisk 14-Year-Old Bordeaux Finish 46%
Matured in refill hogsheads for 13 years and finished for a final year in Bordeaux barrels. Aromas of red fruits, black pepper, and tangy sherbet fill the nose, complemented by notes of raspberry jam, red grapes, honey, and oaky spice throughout the palate.
19th March 2024 Meeting- Irish Whiskies
Knappogue Castle 12yo 43%
A delicious triple distilled single malt Irish whiskey bottling, having spent its days in bourbon casks. This whiskey has a nose of Vanilla shortbread, a crack of black pepper and chewy malt. On the palate it is gentle oak spice and vanilla custard, with hints of cut grass, with a finish of Orchard fruit on a lingering finish.
Writers Tears Red Head 46%
Red Head is matured exclusively in oloroso sherry casks, creating aromas of candied orange peel, chocolate covered marzipan, dried fruit and praline that fill the nose. The palate offers notes of rich nuts, Christmas cake, tangy pineapple, liquorice and melted milk chocolate, with walnuts and baking spice lingering in the finish.
Redbreast 15yo 46%
Deep dark honey, marzipan, caramel and fudge balance. Sandalwood, mango, wood and tea bags – rich and aromatic. Liquorice Allsorts, sugarcoated fennel seeds, crystallised ginger, sweet cinnamon, sherry, children’s cough medicine and toffees.
Micil Earls Island Pot Still Whiskey 46%
A fruity, spicy single pot still Irish whiskey initially matured in ex-bourbon casks, before being matured in a combination of French oak Bordeaux wine casks and American white oak ex-peated whiskey quarter casks. The palate offers notes of boiled sweets, apple drops, maraschino cherry, tart redcurrants and rhubarb, baked up by heaps of spice, with cinnamon, nutmeg, marzipan and toasted hazelnuts that linger in the finish.
Teeling Irish Single Malt Whiskey 46%
Teeling’s single malt contains whiskeys aged for up to 23 years, which have been matured in a range of wine casks: sherry, port, Madeira, white Burgundy and Cabernet Sauvignon. This whiskey has a balanced taste of a mix of dry fruits, citrus, vanilla, spice and cloves, with vibrant notes of melon, figs, toffee and lemon, and finish long with sweetness in harmony with dry tannins from the wood.
The Whistler PX I Love You 46%
This rich, fruity single malt from Boann distillery in Co. Mead was first aged in ex-bourbon barrels before finishing for a minimum of nine months in Pedro Ximenez casks. The nose offers a bouquet of dried fruits and berries, candied oranges and sticky brown sugar. On the palate, these aromas are joined by notes of leather, walnuts and citrus, with a chocolaty finish that whispers ‘PX I love you.’
17th September 2024 Meeting -Japanese & World Whiskies
Ki One Korean Single Malt / Virgin American Oak
Korea’s first single malt whisky comes to us from Ki One distillery in Namyangju, just outside of Seoul. The distillery experiences a dramatic temperature range from 30 degrees in summer to -20 degrees in winter, effectively speeding up the aging process. Matured in new American oak, this single malt opens with a creamy butterscotch character on the nose, which is met by orchard fruit, blackberries and pecans. The palate is light but full of that new cask influence, you can expect notes of runny honey, white pepper and hints of vanilla.
Kamet Indian Single Malt Whisky
A fruity, spicy Indian single malt named after Mount Kamet, India’s third-highest peak, Kamet whisky is made using Six Row barley, indigenous to India and grown in the foothills of the Himalayas, and is matured in a combination of ex-bourbon, ex-wine and ex-sherry casks. Aromas of dried fruit, citrus peel, oaky spice, vanilla and caramel fill the nose, complemented on the palate by notes of raisins, golden sultanas, dried apricots, peppery oak, vanilla, caramel and milk chocolate that linger in the finish.
Yushan Sherry Single Malt – Taiwan
Yushan Signature Sherry Cask single malt has been made at Nantou distillery in Taiwan and is named after the highest mountain on the island. Delicate floral notes mingle with ripe apricot, orange, warm baking spices, sultanas and vanilla on the palate.
Mackmyra Svensk Ek – Swedish
The new name for The First Edition is aged partly in Swedish oak, from ancient trees planted on the island of Visingsö. These casks have imparted spicy herbal flavours, along with vanilla and toffee from the bourbon casks. THis whisky has a bright yellow colour with a hint of amber. Nose: Fruity with citrus, pear, apple and honey. A light oakiness with sweet, lightly toasted bread notes and fresh butter toffee. Taste: Svensk Ek has a spicy character giving notes of sandalwood, dried ginger, black pepper, roasted oak barrel and herbs to our whisky. Fruity and smooth with citrus, caramel and honey. A light oakiness can be discerned at the end.
Amaethon – French Whisky
A French single malt from Amaethon that is made with French barley and has been matured for three years in French oak casks. Aromas of malt, waffles, freshly-baked bread, honey, dried fruit, watermelon, green plum, gingerbread and cinnamon fill the nose, complemented by notes of dried fruit, oak spice, candied ginger, summer flowers, quince and banana throughout the palate.
Starward Left Field – Australian Whisky
matured in Australian Red Wine barrels. Aromas of red apples, strawberry laces, apricot jam, orange peel, raspberries, ginger beer, vanilla and praline fill the nose, complemented by notes of sultanas, ginger cake, blackcurrants, dark chocolate and stewed fruit throughout the palate.
Suntory Toki – Blended Japanese Whisky
Toki is a blended whisky from Suntory’s three distilleries: Yamazaki, Hakushu and Chita. This is a round and sweet blend with a refreshing citrus character and a spicy finish. ‘Toki’ means ‘time’ in Japanese. Toki has a different composition to its sister blend, Suntory Hibiki, and its main components are Hakushu single malt and Chita grain whisky. Nose: Basil, green apple, honey. Palate: Grapefruit, green grapes, peppermint, thyme. Finish: Subtly sweet and spicy finish with a hint of vanilla oak, white pepper and ginger.
